AFD International welcomes the decision of the International Court of Justice in which it ordered the state of Myanmar to thwart its genocidal practices against the Rohingia minority and preserve evidences from past crimes.
The unanimous decision taken by the ICJ in The Hague is remarkable, as it has ordered the de-facto ruler of Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi to uphold the provisions of the genocide convention of 1948.
Myanmar’s government must now listen to the highest authority of justice and seek to not further deny basic rights to the remaining vulnerable Rohingya Muslims in the state of Rakhine, whom have seen unprecedented deterioration of their basic and fundamental rights.
Myanmarese government has now nowhere to hide from the glaring truth of its horrific genocidal crimes and must comply with with the ruling of the ICJ, and stop all efforts of tampering with the evidences.
The 1948 Convention, which Myanmar is part of describes genocide any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:
(a) Killing members of the group.
(b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group.
(c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part.
(d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group.
(e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.
The ruling now is a slap to the so called “Independent Commission of Enquiry” established by the government to “whitewash” its crimes. AFD International’s legal experts are anticipating and calling the UN Security Council to refer the case to theInternational Criminal Court, in order to bring the perpetrators to justice.
