Brunei: New penal code to stone gay people and amputate thieves is simply unacceptable

The launch of the new penal codes by the Brunei government, which will enshrine gay stoning, limbs cutting and kids flogging, is a cause of great concern and constitutes grave human rights violations. The new controversial law is suppose to become effective by 22, April this year.

Many LGBT organisations and communities have expressed their utter disgust and anger at such draconian laws, which do not belong to the 21st century.

Articles 213, 214 and 215 of the newly rebranded penal code criminalises printing, disseminating, importing, broadcasting, and distributing of publications deemed contrary to Sharia law.

AFD International request Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah to immediately such laws, which are clearly barbaric and homophobic.

AFD International urges governments around the world to put pressure on the government of Brunei to live up to the international human rights values  and laws, which includes freedom from torture and ill treatment, freedom of expression and privacy.
